First year of the series and short-lived ‘Rays’ sub-type. This is a pleasing example with choice lustrous surfaces and a strong strike.

One of the finest example of this first year Shield Nickel graded by PCGS. The strike is needle-sharp and a rich luster patina with a faint gold tint coats nearly flawless surfaces. A dramatic die crack is seen in the lower reverse. Excellent eye appeal!

Fully struck with crisp details in the shield and wreath, this coin retains its original fiery red luster across both obverse and reverse, with vibrant cartwheel brilliance that testifies to careful preservation. The color is remarkably fresh and uniform, a rarity for this short-lived Civil War–era denomination.

The combination of a small mintage and a low survival rate make this a semi-key date in the Seated Quarter series. A modest 28,000 were produced. This is a very nice coin for the grade with solid detail and problem-free, even coin-gray surfaces.
