Small Planchet. A handsome and original example displaying a bold central pine tree, with the legends attractively strong, and surfaces that are choice and problem-free. The reverse shows the date 1652 and XII denomination with pleasing bold legibility, framed by a complete beaded border.
These silver shillings, struck in Boston under authority of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, hold a unique place in American numismatic and colonial history as the first widely circulated coinage produced in English America. The Small Planchet variety is the more available of the Pine Tree issues but remains scarce and highly desirable at this grade level.
