A historical issue as it marks the first time steam-powered presses were used at the U.S. Mint. A reeded edge replaced the earlier lettered-edge ‘type’. The traditional estimate is that 1,200 coins were produced using the new coinage presses, but more recent estimates put that number closer to 5,000 coins. Either way, this is a minute mintage compared to the 6,545,000 lettered-edge coins that were struck. This is an attractive example with strong central detail and attractive problem-free silver-gray toning.
