R.E. Russell, Low-128, HT-309, R.5. Dr. Feuchtwanger presumably struck this one-bit token variety on behalf of New York merchant R.E. Russell, since the alloy is German silver, and the obverse die is common to Breen-6 HT-268 Feuchtwanger cents. While the Feuchtwanger cents are fairly common, the R.E. Russell token is seldom encountered. The obverse features the dramatic eagle-and-snake motif, boldly rendered with clear outlines and strong central detail for the grade. The reverse displays the “I O U / 12½ C” legend, sharply legible with well-defined stars and devices. The surfaces are original with even medium-gray patina and honest light wear, free of distracting damage or problems. The overall appearance is solid and appealing.
