A scarce date with a mintage of 96,000 and a low survival rate of mostly low quality coins. In fact, a mint state 1861-S has never been grade at PCGS or NGC. This is a very attractive example with soft silver-gray surfaces that show smooth, even circulation wear with strong remaining detail throughout Liberty’s seated figure, including a clearly defined shield and drapery. The reverse features a bold eagle with well-detailed wings, shield, and arrows. Overall eye appeal is enhanced by natural toning and balanced wear on both sides.
