A highly desirable Civil War–era gold piece with a modest mintage of just 142,790 pieces, nearly all of which saw heavy circulation in an era when gold coins were hoarded or exported due to the economic upheaval of the war. It is estimated that fewer than 500 have survived in all grades, certified and raw. This example retains strong eye appeal with bright yellow-gold coloration and vivid mint luster. The portrait of Liberty remains sharp, with bold detail in her coronet and hair curls. The reverse eagle is equally well defined, with strong feather detail and a crisp shield. Typical light friction on the high points and modest handling marks are consistent with the grade, but overall the surfaces are remarkably pleasing for a Civil War double eagle.
