The 3-cent Third Issue Fractional Currency note, featuring a portrait of George Washington and was issued between 1864 and 1869. These “paper coins” featured light (Fr. 1226) or dark (Fr. 1227) backgrounds behind Washington’s head, and were the only 3 Cent denominational pieces printed during the entire life span of Fractional Currency. This is the tougher of the two with a dark background.
