A lovely example of this very clear overdate. The underlying 1 sits boldly beneath the primary 2 in the date. The surfaces are choice and original. They’re a pleasing light coin-gray with some darker gray toning at the bottom of the obverse. The design features are bold and minimal marks are insignificant and well hidden.
Large 3. Solid detail with surfaces that blend light silver-gray shades. Traces of mint luster remain on both obverse and reverse.
Small Stars Reverse. A better date with a mintage of 15,017 which includes both the large and small star variants. This is a nice original example with strong detail and minimally abraded surfaces.
C-1. Very attractive with strong detail and nice problem-free light brown surfaces.
Small Date, Large Fraction. S-258. Well detailed with choice surfaces that are problem-free and retain a fair amount of mint luster. The obverse is a light reddish-brown while the reverse is medium brown. An arcing die crack at the lower left of the obverse field is diagnostic of the variety.
Spiked Chin. Cohen-8. The last marriage of the Spiked Chin obverse following Cohen-5, 6, and 7. This is a late die state of this durable die. A ‘Spike’ extends from Liberty’s chin, a ‘tongue’ appears to stick out between her lips, and curved die lines are seen in the field opposite her neck. This is […]
Plain 4, No Stems. Extremely well struck with bold hair detail and drapery folds on the obverse and sharply detailed leaves on the reverse wreath. The surfaces are a delightful soft brown with considerable faded red, and drenched in vibrant mint luster. There are minimal minor marks and far fewer than are tolerated for the […]
C-5. Spiked Chin. R-4. The rarest of the 4 different Spiked Chin varieties. Well detailed and attractive with the dramatic spike coming off Liberty’s chin, plus the reverse has a heavy bisecting die crack with additional peripheral die cracks.
